Custom FAQ

The e. scott originals shop has been creating custom pieces for over 15 years (!) and, man, have we learned a lot. Here are some answers to the questions we get most often:

How can I book a meeting? If you'd like to book at custom meeting, please use the Book Meeting Tab at the bottom left corner.

What does the process look like? Each custom client is different, but usually it works like this:

Meeting 1-Initial consultation to figure out what you're looking for, what materials you'd like to use and what budget you'd like to be in.

Meeting 2-Based off of the first meeting we'll do our homework (like get stones to show you, sketch out ideas for your review) and then get you back in the shop to review the sketches and/or stones. From there we will decide how to proceed, either carving a wax model or just straight to fabrication.

Meeting 3-depending on the project, this will either be the meeting where you pick up your piece, or you come to review the wax model made for you. If the model is approved, then we move to fabrication and you can pick up your piece at meeting 4.

Can you melt down metal and make something new? If you have heirloom jewelry you’d like to repurpose, we can do that! If it won’t work for the project (wrong metal type or just bad mojo) we’re happy to scrap it and put the scrap cost toward the new project. Just note, we cannot melt down platinum or palladium (just golds and sterling silver). We charge a $400 fee for this service.

Can we bring our own stones? Want to take Nana’s diamond and turn it into something you’ll wear? We love that. We’ll always give you our honest opinion on the quality of the stone and if it will work well for your project. If you've already purchased your own stone, that's fine too. We charge a $200 setting fee for customers bringing their own stones.

What materials do you work with? We work with recycled metals (silver, golds, platinum) and ethically sourced, fair mined stones. We work with lab grown diamonds, reclaimed and antique diamonds for our larger stones (we avoid new mined diamonds).

How much will it cost? This all depends on the project and the materials used. Take a look at our other pieces for sale to get an idea of what your piece could cost.

While we love to create that piece specifically for you, there are a few styles/designs we have decided that WE WON’T OFFER:

-Pave set anythings. We do offer French set, which is similar, but more durable- see our Glimmer styles. We also can offer different types of settings for small stones, like bead set or flush set.

-Traditional Halo settings or hidden halos. We love a chunky metal halo (see our Modern Halo) or even a bezeled halo, but teeny tiny prongs are not for us. The tend to get pulled on EVERYTHING and the stones fall out...

-CAD design/3D printed pieces. While some of our settings are machine made by our suppliers, the whole of our designs are fabricated by our hands. We admire the jewelers who work with these programs, but that’s just not the skillset we have. (Check out www.ilahjewelry.com in Worcester for some cool CAD creations).

- Other people’s designs. While inspiration pictures are helpful to get an idea of your style, please don’t expect us to recreate something that you’ve found elsewhere. It’s not fair to us as artists, or the originals designer.

We aim to make you happy and will do everything we can to insure that. We take pride in our work and will stand behind it, always, which is why we want to make sure the jewelry we create is made with intention and care.

Please take a look at our Nuptials designs and our Instagram @escottoriginals, to get a feel for the design style that we have created to make sure we’re a good fit for you.  We look forward to working with you!
