Tales From a Shop Dog

The holidays are coming!

The holidays are coming!

Did you know we (meaning Mom) is doing a bunch of popup markets this holiday season?! (I'll be getting my beauty rest).

The first market is Monday November 27th from 4-7 at The Hawthorne in Kenmore Square with a whole bunch of other amazing makers.

The next, I very well might make an appearance at... because we're hosting it! The Highland Hot Block (the 199 Highland Ave section) is having it's very first #HotBlockHoliday with ALL FEMALE vendors popping up in The Workshop Salon, our shop and 7ate9 Bakery.

Who will be there? Well....

In 7ate9 Bakery you'll find:

MegaMade Woodworks and Mud & Yarn

In our shop will be:

Us (obvi), Nora Miller Jewelry and Hollis Leather Goods

In The Workshop Salon:

Amanda Kressler Designs, Aud & El Candle Co. , Brown & Coconut and Intention560

AND the Armory next door is hosting the Holiday Davis Flea!

The following weekend, Sunday the 10th Mom will be at 13 Forest Gallery in Arlington from 12-4.

And THEN back at The Hawthorne on Monday the 18th from 4-7pm.

Wondering when the shop will be open this holiday season? EVERYDAY starting 11/28 (except 12/4) so I'll need lots of love, partying and chicken free treats to fuel my greeter obligations.

Can't wait to see you soon!

Xoxo Mayble

We've come a long way and so has the Highland Hot Block!

We've come a long way and so has the Highland Hot Block!

Guys, we've been BUSY here at the shop and I'm exhausted! It's been 7 years since mom and I opened the shop and we've been hustling every day. We've come a long way though, if I do say so myself. Just look at these before and afters!

I mean even my beds have gotten an upgrade! (I told you I was tired...)

But, we are now the old ladies on the block! All of our neighbors have come in over the past years, so we thought it was about time to introduce our neighbors here on the Highland Hot Block in Somerville.

First to come along a few years after us was M.F. Dulock Pasture Raised Meats

mf dulock

I stand and drool outside their door everyday, and it's the worst/the best when their customers come in with big bags of meat! Sometimes they even bring me the dog treats the butcher's make. I love my neighbors!

Next to come along was The Workshop Salon.

Uncle Tarley opened her hair salon and we instantly became besties. She even bought me my winter coat (pictures to come in a winter blog post, promise) and lets me nap in the sun spots from time to time. The other stylists in there also love me (obvi) and they shower me with love and partying daily, even though they're always super busy. I love my neighbors!

Then along came 7ate9 Bakery

7ate9 Bakery

Did you know they make Boston's Best Cheesecake?! Well, that doesn't matter much to me, but they have TREATS! Auntie Sarah makes me do tricks for them, so I do... I know my role. But she gives me so many snacks and so much love, it's ok. Mom is also well caffeinated thanks to their Almond Milk Lattes, so that makes everyone happy. I love my neighbors!

The newest member of the Hot Block is KMID interior design offices.

Their offices are by far the prettiest (sorry mom and everyone else, but it's what they do!) Earl, their shop dog, isn't a big fan of me...but the ladies smile and love me when they pop in the shop. I love my neighbors!

So next time you're coming to shower me with love, stop on in and say Heeeeyyyyy to our amazing neighbors. Tell them you're a friend of Mayble's!

Now off for a sunshine nap.

Mayble's Tips for Jewelry Care

Mayble's Tips for Jewelry Care

I love it when people grab new shiny treats from our shop, so today I want to give you all some tips on keeping those treats (or as you call them, jewelry) just like new!

Dish Soap, Toothbrush & Warm Water

No, I'm not getting ready for the dentist!  I'm getting ready to clean some stones!!  Just let your jewelry soak in warm soapy water then use a soft bristled toothbrush to really get into those nooks and crannies.  It will make your diamonds, sapphires, and other faceted stones sparkle! Perfect for our engagement rings!  Just be sure to do this over a strainer and check for any loose stones, Emily would be happy to tighten them up for you.

Jewelry Cleaner

Feel free to use store bought jewelry cleaner for general freshening up of your jewels.  Do not use jewelry cleaner if your piece has a patina or is oxidized as part of the design (it will remove it!).  Make sure you read directions on the container!  I dip the bright chains from the Sunspot Necklaces a few times to bring back the shine.

Polishing Cloths

I love polishing cloths for brightening up metal that has become tarnished.  It's a simple way to clean specific areas of jewelry that you might not want to dip in chemicals, like your druzy cuffs.  I can do it with my three toes, so just imagine how easy it is for all of you with thumbs!!

Scotch Brite

If you want to clean your metal but keep a nice matte finish on it, just grab some scotch brite!  It's a little itchy on my delicate paws, but it gets the job done.  This is what Emily and Nora use on our zodiac collection to clean the high parts but leave the perfect patina in the details. Be careful when using the scotch brite on jewelry with stones, it could scratch them, so keep it to the metal!

A few last tips:

DO NOT submerge pearls or druzies in any type of chemical.  When in doubt, clean around a stone that you are unsure about.

If you plan on working out, gardening, kneading dough for dog biscuits (yes please, then deliver to 199b Highland Ave!), etc. please take off your rings!  But you are afraid of losing them? No worries, we've got you covered with our ring keepers!  Keep your paws safe too by taking rings off to dry your hands & under your ring when they get wet.  Moisture can cause irritation.

If at anytime you want to visit me, or get your e. scott originals jewels cleaned by us, come on by the shop and we'll do it up. All we charge is a smile and some treats/love for me.

Be kind to your jeweled treats!

Yours forever,

Mayble (& Nora)

*Disclaimer- These are tips and tricks that we find helpful, but some may work for you some may not. If you have any hesitation, just come on by!*

Workin' hard!

Workin' hard!

Holy Moly have we been busy here at the shop these last few weeks, where to even begin!

We had a VERY important visitor to the shop on July 19th... Danielle and Matt of Gem Gossip! I made sure to greet them with extra enthusiasm and give them a detailed tour of my beds and toys, I mean the store and workshop... We had the best time showing off the jewels and how we make them. I really think I won them over ( I definitely won Matt over, he was pretty into me) because she wrote the nicest things about us. See her article here.

Gem Gossip

THEN on July 20, Mom went to show off our jewels at "The Big Fake Wedding" event in Salem. It was actually a fake wedding! We got to provide all the jewels for the fake Bride, Groom and Bridal party as well as tell people about how WE MAKE RINGS! (you wouldn't believe how many people are surprised that we make things... bananas).

While Mom was there, I took a much needed day off... but still had to keep an eye on our pool... my guard dog duties are never done!

mayble

While all of this was going on, we also have been up to my bat ears with custom projects! Mom has made 6 engagement rings and 4 sets of wedding rings in just the last 2 weeks! ( Her bench is super messy, but my toys are everywhere, so I guess we're even).

Nora has been super busy keeping up with the store inventory as well as helping Mom get it together for the Metal & Smith show in a few weeks... ( thank goodness I get some days off while they're at that one!)

Ok, for now it's back to work.

a tour of the e. scott shop!

a tour of the e. scott shop!

Today I, Mayble, will take a short break from my security post to give you a quick tour of the e. scott brick and mortar shop!  It's both a storefront and a studio space.  Emily creates everything, by hand, in house.  Here is the workbench where most of the magic happens:

Look at all of those tools!  Emily is setting some sapphires and diamonds for a custom piece so I probably shouldn't try and distract her... Coffee from our neighbors 7ate9Bakery is usually on the bench keeping her energized!

Maybe I can go see what Nora's up to!

Fire!!  She's at the soldering station melting some gold for our surfside collection.  I definitely shouldn't be asking for treats while she has a torch in her hand.  *sigh*

On our way back to the front of the shop let's check out the wax carving bench!  If Emily can't build a piece of jewelry out metal she will carve a design into wax and then have that wax cast into any metal she wants. Here are a few of her favorite carving tools:

And finally, here is the shop!  This is where I keep my dog toys and 2 of my 3 dog beds.  We also sell jewelry.

Ok, time to get back on guard dog duty.  Hope you come in and visit and check out our wonderful jewels!  We have some great ready-to-wear engagement rings that I wish came in my size..

I got a promotion!

I got a promotion!

So after 7 years here at the Somerville, MA e. scott originals jewelry shop, I finally got a promotion! While I'll always be the one and only shop dog, guardian of the jewels, and muse for the Mayble Labels collection I now am author to my very own blog, Tales from a Shop Dog! (which you are currently reading). I'm honored to be given this responsibility, that I will take very seriously (in between naps, sunbathing and snacks).

So, first order of business is letting the world know who we are here at the shop!

mayble

Most importantly, there's me. Mayble the Boston Terrier. As I mentioned, I have the hardest job- shop security. It's not easy, but someones got to greet the people, lick the small children, show off the tricks for treats, party with the men & kids waiting for their wives/moms and all around keep the shop safe.

Then there's mom, the E in e. scott (but she's now Emily Surette- but only in life, not in business- we got me an official Dad in September! He's the greatest! But I digress...) She started the business in her our tiny apartment in 2007, working in our spare room until we decided it would be much better to have a place for the public to see me! Or I guess a better place to show off the jewels and have a workspace... That's when we opened the shop at 199b Highland Ave, Somerville in 2010 and since then Mom has been making all the jewelry, both custom and ready to wear and business has been growing every year!

In 2015 we added Auntie Nora (aka Nora Miller of Nora Miller Jewelry ). She's our Inventory Queen! She keeps mom in line and laughing while helping us keep the store stocked with jewels.

e. scott originals as a brand has two sections really, the e. scott nuptials & the everyday wear. We love creating jewelry to be worn daily and loved forever. Maybe that's an engagement ring and wedding bands from our nuptials collection or maybe a gift from our many everyday lines, we want you to know our jewelry is created with love, by our hands, inspected by me (yet another one of my many jobs) and meant to be part of your everyday uniform.

The shop has evolved a lot in the last 7 years ( I now have 3 dog beds- one in the window, one in the shade and one in the workshop) and we are all so excited to see how things continue to evolve.

We're right in the middle of wedding season now, so the shop has been full of love and fun lately- so great for me! (more snacks!)

I'll be posting all kinds of things that I find interesting on here, so check back in to see what we're up to here on the Highland Hot Block!

We hope to see you soon!
